Trigger Point Therapy in SE Portland

A trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot in muscle tissue that sends pain somewhere else in the body. For example, this can be a headache that starts deep in the neck, shoulder pain that travels down the arm into the hand, or glute tightness that produces something that feels exactly like sciatica. These patterns have a source, and that source is often a trigger point.

Trigger point therapy uses precise, sustained pressure to locate and deactivate these spots, interrupting the referral pattern at its origin. It is specific, methodical work. When we find the right point, you often feel exactly the familiar pain you came in with, followed by a release that can be genuinely surprising in its completeness.

Benefits of Trigger Point Therapy

For people who have been managing chronic referred pain, trigger point therapy can offer relief that other approaches have not. Regular work can:

  • Resolve referred pain patterns that have not responded to general massage or stretching.
  • Reduce chronic headaches and migraines that originate in neck and shoulder trigger points.
  • Restore range of motion limited by muscle shortening around active trigger points.
  • Relieve jaw tension and TMJ discomfort that often traces back to trigger points in the masseter and surrounding muscles.
  • Address the source of apparent sciatica that is actually referred pain from gluteal trigger points.
  • Break cycles of pain and guarding that develop when the body compensates around an active trigger point.
  • Improve sleep quality in people whose pain disrupts rest.

Who Should Consider Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy is particularly valuable for people whose pain moves or radiates, whose pain does not match a clear structural diagnosis, who have tried general massage without lasting relief, or who notice that pressure in one area consistently produces pain somewhere else.

It works well for office workers, people who spend long hours in fixed positions, and those with chronic headaches. Athletes and active people dealing with overuse injuries are also great candidates for trigger point therapy.

What to Expect

1

Intake & Mapping

We start by mapping your pain. Where does it originate, where does it travel, and what makes it change? This information guides the entire session and helps identify which muscle groups are likely harboring active trigger points.

2

During Your Session

We apply direct, sustained pressure to identified points. You may feel your familiar referred pain activate, sometimes intensely. This is expected and is a sign the right spot has been found. The pressure is held until the tissue releases.

3

After Your Session

After deactivation, the surrounding tissue is worked to help the muscle return to its normal length and function. Most clients leave with noticeably reduced symptoms and significant pain relief.

For active, chronic pain patterns, weekly sessions often produce the most significant results for the first four to six weeks. Once the primary points are addressed, monthly maintenance keeps new patterns from re-establishing.

Mix and Match Massage Styles

Trigger point work is almost always combined with other techniques at Rose City Massage & Wellness. This precise therapeutic work is integrated with broader strokes and tissue preparation that make the treatment more effective and the session more comfortable. Our trigger point therapy massages often have aspects of deep tissue and even Swedish massage incorporated, based on each client's needs. Gua Sha and cupping are also common modalities we apply alongside trigger point therapy to break up adhesions and release stuck tissue.
