Prenatal Massage in SE Portland

Pregnancy changes everything about how your body feels and functions. Your posture shifts to accommodate a growing center of gravity, your sleep becomes fragmented, and your nervous system is working harder than usual. The physical demands are real, and they can compound week by week.

Prenatal massage is one of the most effective ways to support your body through those changes. At Rose City Massage & Wellness, every prenatal session is adapted to your trimester and your specific discomforts. We use specialized side-lying positioning with supportive pillows throughout, so you are comfortable from the moment you settle in.

Benefits of Prenatal Massage

Research supports prenatal massage as a safe and effective intervention for many of the physical and emotional challenges of pregnancy. Regular sessions can help:

  • Reduce lower back pain, one of the most common complaints across all trimesters, by addressing the muscles and connective tissue strained by postural change.
  • Ease hip and glute tension that develops as the pelvis shifts and the gait changes.
  • Reduce swelling in the legs and feet by supporting lymphatic circulation.
  • Relieve shoulder and upper back tension from the postural changes of growing breasts and shifting posture.
  • Calm the nervous system and reduce cortisol levels, supporting both maternal wellbeing and fetal development.
  • Improve sleep quality by reducing physical discomfort and promoting relaxation.
  • Support emotional regulation during a period of significant hormonal and life transition.

Who Should Consider Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is appropriate for most pregnant women from the first trimester onward. It is particularly valuable for those experiencing back pain, hip pain, leg cramps, or disrupted sleep. It also provides meaningful support for those navigating the emotional weight of pregnancy, whether that is anxiety, grief, ambivalence, or simply the overwhelm of a body that no longer feels familiar.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, a history of preterm labor, placenta previa, preeclampsia, or other medical complications, please consult with your provider before booking.

What to Expect

1

Before Your Session

We'll ask about your pregnancy stage, any specific areas of discomfort, and whether there are conditions or concerns we should factor into the session.

2

During Your Session

You will be positioned on your side with bolster support throughout. We typically use lighter pressure than a standard session, with a focus on nervous system regulation and physical relief, tailored to your needs.

3

After Your Session

Take your time getting up and moving. Drink water, move slowly, and give yourself a few minutes before jumping back into your day.

Many clients come monthly throughout pregnancy, shifting to every two to three weeks in the third trimester as discomfort increases. There is no single right answer. Listen to your body and book when you need it.

Mix and Match Massage Styles

Prenatal sessions at Rose City Massage & Wellness are not locked into a single approach. If you would like some gentle energy work alongside physical relief, Reiki can be incorporated. Or if you have a specific area of chronic tension that predates your pregnancy, we can address it appropriately within the prenatal framework. Tell us what you need and we'll build the session around it.
